I will make my travel matter – for our planet, for people, and for wildlife.
On World Tourism Day in September 2019, The Travel Corporation (TTC) and TreadRight launched our Make Travel Matter Pledge, asking team members, partners, and guests to stand with us in the mission to travel responsibly. The response was and continues to be inspiring, and we are thrilled to see that we are not alone in wanting to do better.
But a pledge is only as good as the action it generates, and in order to make good on this promise, we had two jobs to do:
1. To help others live the pledge. We’ve been working to create resources like our Make Travel Matter Checklist and our Make Travel Matter Pledge Video to support guests and the global travel community in becoming conscious and responsible travelers, before, during, and after their trips. Our goal is to continue providing education and support for travelers to ensure their impact is a positive one.
2. To live the pledge ourselves. As a global travel provider, it is our responsibility to address our environmental footprint and community impact, and to be the responsible travel company our guests can feel good about choosing. So, in September 2020, one year after our pledge was launched, we released How We Tread Right: TTC’s 5-year sustainability strategy and our blueprint for turning our pledge, into action.
TTC has long considered its global impact, and TreadRight was formed more than 12 years ago to fund sustainable travel initiatives worldwide in the areas which travel touches the most. But we furthered in our mission to do right by the planet, its people and wildlife. How We Tread Right commits to 11 Goals at the TTC-level which address the impact of our operations and our trips. These 11 Goals, tied to the United Nations Global Goals, have been identified in order to safeguard our 3 Pillars for generations to come:
For the Planet
When I explore this planet, I will do my best to tread right. I will refuse single-use plastics when I can and recycle what I cannot avoid. When possible, I will offset my travels.
How We Tread Right addresses sustainability and conservation by targeting climate change, sustainable food production and responsible consumption through carbon management, renewable energy, the food cycle, waste reduction, and the elimination of single-use plastics. For People
When I meet new people, I will honor their home as I do my own and do so in the spirit of diversity and inclusion. I will purchase locally made items wherever possible and pay a fair price.
How We Tread Right address community support and cultural preservation by targeting overtourism through Make Travel Matter experiences, a standalone strategy to encourage greater diversity and inclusion at TTC and on our trips (in development), and our global give-back efforts. For Wildlife
When I experience wildlife, I will do so in nature. I will not ride animals that ought not be ridden, nor support animal cruelty in any way.
